A versatile player characterized by her warm and present tone, hornist Lis Rubard performs and teaches in New York City. At the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, she studied classical horn with Roland Pandolfi and David Brockett, played in the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble under conductor Tim Weiss, and studied chamber music with renowned instrumentalists James DeSano, Richard Hawkins, and Michel DeBost. Her interests in chamber and contemporary music have led her to perform and teach at festivals and clinics in the U.K., Arkansas, Finland and Panama.
In New York, Lis' continued interest in experimental music and a desire to expand her expressive toolkit through improvisation led to jazz horn studies with Mark Taylor. Recent engagments include the Kevin Blanq Big Band, the Chelsea Symphony, the Tom Abbott Big Band, and Kelly Fenton's Bottomless Cup Jazz Orchestra. Some of the other groups and leaders she has played for include PULSE, the New York Chamber Players, Rob Reddy's Small Town, Rob Mosher's Storytime, and Bill Apollo Brown. Most often, Lis can be seen playing downtown and Brooklyn clubs as a member of the indie-rock band The Loom, playing horn and trumpet. She is open to collaboration, especially with musicians looking to experiment and cross genres.
